Another Holiday Poem: Swimming by Geri Gmahling -- December 25, 2009

PHOENIX, Arizona, December 25. IT is becoming a tradition for Swimming World to run a poem on Christmas day, and this year is no different. Throughout the year, we receive countless numbers of submissions hoping to be published. Most of the articles are requests to do feature stories on various personalities throughout the sport, but we also receive our fair share of poetry.

Today, we publish a poem entitled Swimming written and submitted by Geri Gmahling:

Swimming

Sometimes the water
is setting jello,
resisting
the rhythm of my strokes.

Other times the water
is iced tea,
thin and cool,
soothing as I glide through.

Sometimes the water
is soda,
bright and effervescent;
I blast through the bubbles.

The worst is when the water
is cream of wheat,
thick and unyielding,
dragging me down.

The best is when the water
plays with my gravity,
hugging me and holding me
as I splash, twist and spin,
dive under in a graceful somersault,
come up for air,
lay back on the surface
look up at the sky and
let my troubles float away.
